Large, stationary, silent object observed for approximately 30 minutes

Large, stationary, silent object observed for approximately 30 minutes

Location: Stony Brook NY (Long Island) 
Observed from vicinity of Stony Brook Yacht Club looking northwest over Long Beach peninsula in St. James. Perhaps a few hundred feet off the ground/water. 
Five or six smaller objects with similar flashing lights appeared/disappeared in NW sky at higher altitude, moving slowly and frequently changing direction. Local reports of similar sighting that night further west along the North Shore of Long Island. Any ideas?
