Was watching what I thought was a satellite, but orbit became very erratic

Object noticed in direct southern sky; about 45 degrees; south of bright star (planet) to the near west but lower.
Traveled east quickly; high up and seemed too high and fast for a plane.
I thought it was a satellite, but was traveling too quickly. Abruptly turned
north, almost a 90 degree angle, and then the pattern was erratic.
Whatever star (planet) was directly east from me, about 65 degrees, it was moving up and down there; disappeared (cloudy and ashy conditions). There was a definite up and down movement, in a zig zag fashion. Nothing that makes sense. I have been casually watching planets, stars, space stations, satellites. This was weird.
