Bizarre silent helicopter. One night in 1989 (I don’t recall the exact date, say early Nov. 6th) I woke up at exactly 1:00 am. For some reason I looked out my bedroom window. To my shock I saw a craft of some kind hovering in a fixed mid-air position with its front windshield facing directly at me. It was the size and shape of a helicopter with a dim yellowish light bathing the cockpit (may have had navigation lights) and was only a few hundred feet away and less than a hundred feet off the ground. I believe it was hovering above the street between rows of houses, looking like it might land on a rooftop. I think what shocked me most was the total lack of noise. Suddenly, it swung a bright, white searchlight directly at my window, as if it had spotted me. I went to wake someone, and we came back and saw it had pivoted 90 degrees, showing its side. It resembled a Bell 206 helicopter, color unknown, and may have had English alphanumeric writing on it. It then silently, lazily drifted just over rooftops toward Rock Creek Park. Since then, every helicopter I’ve seen, near or distant to the size of a speck, has made loud noise, even through a window. Yet this “helicopter” was dead silent only a block away from me while hovering just over the rooftops of a quiet suburban neighborhood in the middle of the night.
