Silver triangular craft hovering over highway

Was driving to a friend’s parents’ house for Thanksgiving while I was in college.  It was a clear sunny day on a pretty empty stretch of highway.  My friend pointed out a triangular, silver object hovering in the sky just above the trees on the passenger side of the car, maybe a couple hundred yards out.  As I drove on we watched it for several minutes, just hovering there and then suddenly it flew, unbelievably fast to be right in front of us, about a mile ahead, hovering over the highway.  It stayed there a couple minutes and then split into two equal parts and they both flew (again super fast) in opposite directions and then disappeared into the horizon.  It made no sound and there were no lights on the object.
